Clean cookstove and insecticide-treated bed net (ITN) interventions

Clean cookstove and insecticide-treated bed net (ITN) interventions reach hundreds of millions of households and attract billions of dollars in global investment each year. Through Impact Case 3 (IC3), we will provide comprehensive, living systematic reviews of these two prominent climate-related public health interventions.

Clean cookstove interventions aim to contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing household air pollution, black carbon emissions and deforestation, while also reducing premature mortality from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. ITNs are a key climate adaptation intervention that protects populations against climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and other infectious diseases.

We will provide rigorous, synthesised and living evidence on the effects of these interventions on mortality and related health and environmental outcomes, using state-of-the-art methods for evidence identification, appraisal and synthesis. Together, these reviews will generate robust and timely evidence through regularly updated syntheses of the evolving evidence base, supporting evidence-informed decision-making by policymakers and funders seeking to reduce the global burden of disease attributable to climate-sensitive health risks.

We will also demonstrate the practical use and integration of emerging automation technologies in living systematic reviews, rigorously evaluating their potential to improve the efficiency, scalability and responsiveness of evidence synthesis. Finally, our work will demonstrate the value of transparent reporting for the meta-analysis of mortality outcomes, which single trials cannot be reliably designed to estimate.
